Hello everyone,

This revision session will cover topics on upper limb, lower limb, and back, helping you get prepared for your exam in November.

We will also be giving hints and tips (stuff the med school don’t tell you) and a MOCK EXAM at the end of the session, which will be in the same format as the actual exam.

Session is on 9th Nov from 2 – 5pm at the Shared Lecture Theatre, Biosi. Please arrive 30mins before to get registered/sign up for membership.

Membership is only £4, so please join on the student union website:

http://groups.cardiffstudents.com/club_signup.aspx

…or at the session itself. The membership will allow you to come to all the revision sessions for the year and get handouts for free!
(Without the membership, each session will cost £4.50 and the handouts 50p, so it’s definitely well worth signing up!)

Click “attending” if you’re planning on coming so we can make sure you get a handout & invite your friends. We are also making CDs which will have the presentation, notes and mock exam on for £2 to help us raise money for our charity, Iraq Relief. All proceeds will go to helping to buy medical supplies for orphanages and hospitals in Iraq.

If you want a CD, or if you have any questions please leave a comment, or refer to our Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=314949591853513 .

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you there!

The Student Iraqi Medical Association (SIMA) is an academic society for ALL Cardiff University medical students from years 1 to 5 that was set up in 2008 with the aim of organising peer-assisted teaching – that is getting medics in the years above to help the medics in the years below with academic issues. We put on numerous academic events through out the year and in turn we collect donations at these academic events in order to fund raise for our associated charity, Iraq Relief, hence ‘Iraqi’ being in the name of the society!

For 1st year medics we provide you with a free copy of a thorough student recommended booklist (which will come in handy when you start buying expensive medical text books!) and hold 2 Anatomy revision sessions in the year to help make learning anatomy less overwhelming in which we give you hints and tips about the exam as dissection forms a significant part of the 1st year course. We are very experienced in delivering high quality Anatomy revision sessions which have attracted over 450 medics in the past year and they are enjoyable and informal events that will prove to be useful to you for exams. We also give away cool anatomy raffle prizes at these sessions!

Membership to the society is only £4 for the year which includes free attendance at both sessions. Only members can attend our academic events and signing up is very easy. We will be at the Health Care Freshers’ Fayre on Monday 27th September where you can sign up and you can also become a member by signing up online through the Student’s Union website.

For more information about the charity we support please visit www.iraq-relief.org
We look forward to welcoming you to the society!

On May 8 & 9th 2010, Dr Hasan Haboubi (CT2 from Morriston hospital, Swansea) provided a high quality revision session for the 5th years of cardiff medical school. It took place from 10am till 3pm during the weekend and was thoroughly enjoyed by the students who attended. The presentations included examination of the cardiovascular system and respiratory system on 8th May and Gastroenterology and Neurology on 9th May where each presentation was 2 hours long. As SIMA academic events are run to raise money for charity we charged £5 per day for this session in which we provided free pizza for lunch! This session will take place next year for the final year students of 2011.

Here are some of the feedback comments:

‘He gave us useful tips on how to present and it was a good, interactive, friendly teaching session’

‘Great enthusiasm and key topics covered. It has boosted my confidence hugely’

‘It was a clear, entertaining and motivating session’

‘This session should definitely continue next year!’

The 2nd year Head and Neck Anatomy session took place on 9th December 2009 and was a major success. Around 130 students attended the intensive 3 hour session and we collected just over £60 in the 15 minutes we had to collect donations. Thank you to those who made a contribution!

Quotes from the session:

‘The session was of a very high standard – better than last year!’

‘The presenters all knew their stuff and were confident. I enjoyed the session last year but this year was on another level’

‘Handouts were awesome! Keep up the good work – we love what you do’

‘Using the clickers was a great idea – the clinical quiz at the end was great’

‘A very well organised event! Covered most of the things we needed to know and the clinical quiz at the end was very good. Thank you!’

‘Handouts were amazing and allowed us to just sit and listen to what the presenters were saying’

‘This session was brilliant. Very detailed and had clinical relevance too. Handouts were a very good idea’

Photos from the event… (apologies to Yousar Jafar who presented the Clinical Quiz and Kamanika Mohottige who presented ‘Blood vessels and the Parotid gland’ for not being photographed during your presentations!)

If you would like to get involved please email jafary@cf.ac.uk. You will be sent a letter with information about the society. Once you have confirmed which dates you are available to teach, we will email you with the details of the venue.

The 3rd year is a completely different ball game to the pre-clinical years and to ease the transition and help you with clinical examinations we have organised weekly OSCE sessions held by the 4th year medical students. They cover all the systems examinations with tips on how to pass the OSCE from students who have already been through it.

During these 2 hour sessions we get students to practice the examinations on each other and provide feed back on your technique. Due to the interactive nature of this tutorial only 10 students can attend a tutorial. We will send an email to your year group with the dates and topics to be covered. Students will then be chosen on a first come first serve basis but you must be a member of the society to attend these tutorials. Please see the membership tab.

Head and Neck anatomy is a difficult region to get to grips with at first but the SIMA year 2 head and neck anatomy revision session aims to make learning the nitty gritty details of head and neck anatomy enjoyable. Our presentations are designed to be interactive and concise so you can be sure that you walk out of the shared lecture theatre with more confidence and knowing you don’t have to stress too much over revision during the Christmas break!

The 3 hour session will cover the main topics from your learning outcomes and will consist of 5 presentations and a clinical multiple choice quiz at the end!
At all our academic events we collect donations from the students attending and this money goes to a charity that helps Iraqi children. We also give away anatomy prizes at these events – so if you donate £1 you will get a free raffle ticket!

Handouts are available at this session so you don’t have to scribble anything down – just sit and absorb the information!

SIMA provides academic support to 1st years by putting on Anatomy revision sessions.

There are 2 anatomy revision sessions planned for the year and they’re certainly not to be missed! Here are some quotes from students who have attended the sessions over the past year:

• “The revision session was comprehensive and highlighted what we needed to know”
• “The relaxed atmosphere and peer teaching made me feel more confident”
• “Clear, easy to understand and enjoyable!”
• “By students for students – always best!”
• “It’s a different way of revising and first hand tips from those who experienced the stress of pre-exam revision was useful”

We hold these revision sessions in order to fund raise for our charity Iraq Relief and to date we have collected over £250 in donations from students who have attended since February 2009. We appreciate any donation you can give and as an incentive for you to donate we give away anatomy related raffle prizes at the end of the session!

Handouts are also provided for the session so you don’t need to scribble down everything on the slide.

This event is free for members and you must be a member to attend. Membership is only £2. Please see the membership tab.
